HC Deb 16 October 1912 vol 42 cc1248-9W
Mr. KELLAWAY

asked the Home Secretary if his Department exercises any control over the weight of motor omnibuses; if so, how many licences have been issued to motor omnibuses of more than 3½ tons weight; and whether a number of omnibuses of nearly 6 tons weight are still allowed to run through the streets of London?

Mr. McKENNA

The maximum weight permitted under the regulations governing the construction of Metropolitan motor omnibuses is 3½ tons, and there are probably not more than a score of old type motor omnibuses exceeding this weight now in use in the streets. No motor omnibus exceeding 5 tons in weight has ever been licensed for use in London.

Mr. KELLAWAY

asked if the London motor omnibus trust carries policemen free of charge when off duty?

Mr. McKENNA

The practice referred to is expressly forbidden by the Regulations of the police service, and from time to time stage carriage companies have been reminded of this, and asked to cooperate with the police authorities in seeing that the prohibition is enforced.
