HC Deb 25 November 1912 vol 44 cc829-30W
MARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

asked the Postmaster-General why it is that sub-postmasters are paid only a ½d. for insurance cards issued, whereas approved societies are paid 3d. per card, seeing that sub-postmasters are unestablished servants; whether it is proposed to give any allowance for selling insurance stamps; and, if so, how much and when?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

Under the provisional arrangements in force ½d. per card is considered to be sufficient remuneration for the work performed by sub-postmasters in connection with the issue and renewal of contribution cards. As regards stamps, I beg to refer the Noble Lord to the reply given in the House to a similar question to-day. Approved societies have far greater work and responsibility under the Insurance Act than sub-postmasters. I am not aware that 3d. is being paid to them for the issue of each card.
