HC Deb 21 June 1912 vol 39 c2082W
Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the Home Secretary (1) what proportion of persons let out on bail during the years 1909, 1910, and 1911 absconded, or in what proportion of cases the bail was estreated; and (2) whether there are any records in the Home Office as to the proportion of persons committed for trial without bail who were subsequently acquitted; and, if so,

whether he can give the figures for the years 1909, 1910, and 1911?

Mr. McKENNA

I will answer these two questions together. The figures of persons committed without bail are given in Table 39 of the Criminal Statistics. The tabulation of the 1911 Returns is not yet complete, but for 1909 and 1910 the figures are:—

No. committed for trial without bail. No. of these subsequently acquitted. Proportion.
Per cent.
1909 11,270 1,324 11.76
1910 11,113 1,235 11.11
I have no figures as to the number of persons released on bail who absconded.
