HC Deb 21 June 1912 vol 39 cc2079-80W
Mr. SHEEHAN

asked whether the Local Government Board have received a resolution from the Millstreet old age pension sub-committee protesting against their decision in depriving Mr. John Buckley, of Liscahane, of his pension; have the committee strongly represented the fact that Mr. Buckley's income is only£12 per annum, as proved clearly by documentary evidence produced before them; can he therefore explain why Mr. Buckley was deprived of his pension; and whether any course is open to him or the pension subcommittee to have the decision of the Local Government Board reviewed?

Mr. BIRRELL

The facts generally are as stated in the question. The pension was disallowed on the ground that John Buckley's means exceeded the statutory limit. He is maintained on a farm which he assigned to his son in July, 1909, and which comprises eighty acres, carrying twelve cows in addition to other stock. The decision of the Local Government Board is not subject to review.

Mr. SHEEHAN

asked the Chief Secretary whether the Local Government Board have received a statement from the Mac-room Pension Sub-Committee, No. 2 district, showing the circumstances under which Cornelius Sheehan, Inchamore, Coolea, was granted an old age pension; is he aware that when this pension was originally granted Sheehan was recommended for it by the pension officer who then investigated his case; has any change whatever taken place in his position or circumstances; and, if not, will he say why it should be sought to now deprive him of his pension?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Local Government Board have received the statement referred to in the question, but the other documents relating to the case have not yet been forwarded to them, so that they have no information respecting the grounds on which the pension officer raised the question.
