HC Deb 13 June 1912 vol 39 cc1197-8W
Mr. NORTON-GRIFFITHS

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India if he will encourage preferential trading between India and our Dominions; and whether the Governments of Canada or Australia have yet approached the Indian Government in the matter?

Mr. MONTAGU

The Indian tariff being a tariff for revenue purposes only, it would be inconsistent with the principle on which it is framed to grant preferential rates to the produce of any special country. The answer to the second question is in the negative. But the Dominion of Canada and New Zealand have extended to India the preferences granted to the United Kingdom.
