§ Mr. BURGOYNEasked the Undersecretary of State for War the amount of Khedival and Colonial allowances paid to officers employed with the army of occupation; whether the contribution of the Egyptian Government covers such allowances for the whole year or is based on the anticipated leave of each officer during which period such allowances would not be payable; and, in the event of such contribution covering the allowances referred to over the whole year, if he will explain why officers proceeding on leave do not receive them during absence from the country; and what becomes of the surplus, if any, remaining in the hands of the British Government?
§ Mr. TENNANTThe amount paid is approximately £12,000 per annum. As far as Colonial allowances (including Khedival allowances) are concerned, the contribution is intended to cover payments of only such allowances as are issuable under the Regulations, and allowances are not issuable for any period of leave taken outside the limits of the command. For this reason there is no surplus.
