HC Deb 21 February 1912 vol 34 cc696-7W
Mr. HUGH LAW

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether he is aware that police from the adjoining stations, in charge of the district inspector, were drafted into Falcarragh, county Donegal, on the night of 8th February last; was there a disturbance or a riot expected on the occasion; if so, what grounds the authorities had for fearing it; to whom are the travelling and extra police expenses chargeable; what was the amount of such extra charges; and whether members of the local band were subjected to espionage on the part of the police during that evening?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Inspector-General informs me that four extra police were on duty in Falcarragh on the night in question. It was expected that two local bands would turn out and parade the town, and owing to their conduct on previous occasions the presence of extra police was taken as a precautionary measure. There was no additional expense incurred by these patrols. The members of the band were not subjected to any espionage whatever.
