HC Deb 27 February 1911 vol 22 c164W
Mr. FETHERSTONHAUGH

asked whether the Commissioners of National Education could see their way to reopen the Askill national school, county Leitrim, as the pupils, from thirty to forty in number, who formerly attended the school, have no other school within a reasonable distance which they can attend?

Mr. BIRRELL

The teacher at Askill national school left on 30th June, 1910, and in view of the low average attendance of pupils it became necessary under the Rules of the Commissioners of National Education to consider the question of a rearrangement of the schools in the locality. It was found that none of the twenty-nine pupils on the rolls of the school would have more than two miles to walk to another school under similar management, and that, therefore, Askill school was not needed. The Commissioners accordingly withdrew their grants from the school from the 31st December, 1910, and they cannot see their way to reconsider their decision.
