HC Deb 21 February 1911 vol 21 cc1871-2W
Mr. GILHOOLY

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether his attention had been called to the want of a deep-water pier at Baltimore; whether the Congested Districts Board for Ireland some years ago recognised that want and promised to have a pier constructed; and, in view of the fact that a bridge across the Lee, connecting the termini of the railways in the city of Cork, is in course of construction, he will give this matter his immediate attention and facilitate the loading of fish in the trucks of the railway company at Baltimore and thereby give the hundreds of fishermen who frequent Baltimore an opportunity of placing their fish in the English markets without unnecessary delay?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Congested Districts Board did not promise to have a pier constructed at Baltimore, but stated that if a satisfactory scheme were prepared they would consider what sum they would contribute towards the cost of the work. The Board have always recognised that a deep water pier, with a railway siding, would be of very great advantage to the fishing industry at Baltimore. The matter is at present engaging the attention of the Board.
