HC Deb 04 April 1911 vol 23 cc2171-2W
Major HENDERSON

asked the President of the Local Government Board, whether it is to be optional for a medical officer of health to reside in the district under his charge; and, in the event of his living at a distance from his work, what arrangements are to be made in the event of his being unable to immediately attend and investigate a case of scarlet fever or similar disease?

Mr. BURNS

There is no statutory requirement that a medical officer of health should reside in his district, and the Board do not regard it as essential that he should do so. Most medical officers of health, however, do reside in their districts, or, in the case of medical officers of health acting for a combined area, in one of their districts, or within easy reach of them, so that they are able at short notice to attend to any urgent matter.
