§ Mr. LONSDALEasked the Chief Secretary whether he is aware that the English Board of Agriculture are considering the question of removing the embargo upon the importation of live cattle from the Argentine; and whether, having regard to the injury which would result to the Irish cattle industry from such a step, the Irish Department of Agriculture ore taking any measures to safe guard Irish interests in this matter?
§ Mr. BIRRELLI understand that the Argentine Government have made representations to the English Board of Agriculture and Fisheries that owing to the absence of foot-and-mouth disease for a year animals should again be admitted into Great Britain for slaughter at the port of landing only. These representations are under consideration, and the Irish Department of Agriculture is in communication with the English Board on the subject. No question arises as to the importation of store cattle.
