HC Deb 28 April 1910 vol 17 cc747-8W
Mr. HAZLETON

asked the Chief Secretary what would be the probable cost of making assistant teachers eligible for promotion to second grade salaries on the same conditions of efficiency and good service as principal teachers?

Mr. BIRRELL

There are no statistics available which would enable the Commissioners of National Education to estimate the probable cost of the change indicated in the question without a long and laborious investigation.

Mr. HAZLETON

asked the Chief Secretary what would be the cost of appointing a second assistant teacher in schools having an average attendance of eighty-five pupils instead of the present average of ninety-five?

Mr. BIRRELL

I am informed by the Commissioners of National Education that the ultimate increased cost to the State which would arise from lowering the average daily attendance of pupils required for recognition of a second assistant teacher in a national school from ninety-five to eighty-five would be about £12,000 per annum.
