HC Deb 28 April 1910 vol 17 cc761-2W
Mr. REES

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that the number of horses purchased for the Army in Wales has increased from one in 1905–6 to thirty-eight in 1909–10; and whether, seeing that only thirty-eight have been purchased out of a total of 4,317, he will take steps for a larger proportion of purchases to be made from Wales?

Mr. HALDANE

I regret that the facts are as stated. For some time past the Department has been endeavouring to purchase more horses in Wales, but, so far, the results have not been encouraging. It is hoped, however, that in time farmers and others may be induced to breed horses more suitable for military purposes than are bred there at present.
