HC Deb 21 September 1909 vol 11 c386W
Mr. NANNETTI

asked the Secretary of State for War what military training do the Royal Engineers employed on the Ordnance Survey in Ireland receive during the year; and whether Civil Service members of the Territorial Forces serving in that Department in Ireland do more military service than the said Royal Engineers?

Mr. HALDANE

The Royal Engineers employed on the Ordnance Survey in Ireland receive seven months' military training on enlistment and 24 days' military training biennially. Civil Service members of the Territorial Force serving on the Ordnance Survey in Ireland would be required to undergo the training required of the branch of the service of the Territorial Force to which they belong.

Mr. NANNETTI

asked the Secretary of State for War how many Royal Engineers are at present employed on the Ordnance Survey; how many have been trained as military topographers; and how many are at present fitted for active service as topographers?

Mr. HALDANE

Three hundred and fifty-nine Royal Engineers are at present employed on the Ordnance Survey. Of these 91 are fully-trained military topographical surveyors and 160 are partly trained. The former are ready for active service, and the latter could readily be made so by a little extra training.
