§ Mr. CLYNESasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the new American tariff proposes to penalise by an extra 25 per cent, ad valorem duty all the export trade of a country which pays a bounty upon any of its exports; and whether there is any bounty, paid upon exports from this country which will cause British exports to incur the penalising duty referred to?
§ Mr. CHURCHILLThe answer is in the negative. The new United States tariff, likes its predecessor, imposes an additional duty above that prescribed by the tariff equal to the net amount of any bounty or grant given by the exporting country in respect of any particular article. No bounties are accorded on the exportation of any article from this country.
