HC Deb 05 October 1909 vol 11 c1981W
Sir HENRY COTTON

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the rate of duty on opium in the Federated Malay States has been raised to 1,200 dollars or to 1,260 dollars a chest, as the figures are differently given on pages 8 and 39 of the Report of the Resident General for 1908; and what is the sterling value of this duty?

Colonel SEELY

The rate of duty on opium in the Federated Malay States has been raised to 1,200 dollars a chest. The rate of 1,260 dollars, quoted by my hon. Friend, is, in all probability, a printer's error. A duty of 1,200 dollars a chest is equivalent at the present rate of exchange to £140.
