HC Deb 19 May 1909 vol 5 cc529-30W
Mr. LONSDALE

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether, having regard to the undertaking that persons bound over to keep the peace or otherwise made amenable for cattle driving would be disqualified from receiving holdings of land, he will state the reasons which make it undesirable to ascertain from the police whether the undertaking has been uniformly acted upon; whether he is aware that the information can readily be obtained from the police and checked by the Estates Commissioners; and whether he will consider the expediency of procuring this information with a view to satisfying Members that the undertaking in question has been carried out in every case?

Mr. BIRRELL

The allocation of untenanted land amongst the persons legally eligible there for is a matter within the jurisdiction and discretion of the Estates Commissioners, and the Government do not think it desirable to ask the police to enter into an inquiry and to report on the way in which the Commissioners have exercised their discretion and discharged their duties. The general considerations which guide the Commissioners in the matter have already been stated.
