whether he will state the figures of the membership of clubs in which intoxicating liquors are supplied for the year 1896, and for the years 1905, 1906, 1907, 1908, and 1909?

Mr. GLADSTONE

I am sorry that I cannot give the hon. Member the figures he desires. As regards the year 1896, I can only refer him to the figures relating to clubs, including estimates of membership, which are given in Volume IV. of the volumes published by the Royal Commission on the Liquor Licensing Laws, and are summarised on page 180 thereof. For the, years 1905 and onwards the numbers of registered clubs in England and Wales

are officially ascertained, and are given in the annual volumes of licensing statistics, but they do not show membership figures, and I am not in possession of information on that point.
