HC Deb 09 July 1909 vol 7 c1621W
Captain CRAIG

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that? the property of monastic and conventual institutions in Ireland is held in the names of individuals, thus escaping the jurisdiction of the Charity Commissioners; and whether, under such circumstances, they will, in future, be liable to the increased taxation proposed under the Finance Bill?

Mr. LLOYD-GEORGE

The existing liabilities and exemptions of these institutions in respect of taxation remain unaltered by the proposals of the Finance Bill, except in so far as there may be any change in the rate of a particular tax affecting them. As regards the Land Value Duties, and the proposals in regard to Estate Duties, contained in Clause 43, the question of liability depends on the extent to which the exemptions provided for in Clause 25 and theproviso to Clause 43 are applicable to the institutions in question.
