Mr. Prisk

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many community health councils there were in each year since 1997. [187760]

Ms Rosie Winterton

Between 1997 and November 2003 there were 184 community health councils (CHCs). Three CHCs (Bassetlaw, Southern Derbyshire and Hounslow) were closed in November 2003. CHCs were abolished on 1 December 2003 and all CHC offices were closed on that date.
