To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills how many students sat the A-level examination in(a) mathematics and (b) physics in 1993; and what proportion were in private sector schools. [158608]

The information requested is as follows:

  1. The total number of A-level entries in mathematics in England in 1993 was 62,616, 21.6 per cent. of which were in independent schools.
  2. The total number of A-level entries in physics in England in 1993 was 34,467, 21.3 per cent. of which were in independent schools.
