HC Deb 30 April 2003 vol 404 c419W
Jon Trickett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills how many cases concerning schools in the Hemsworth constituency were heard by Special Education Needs Tribunal in 2001–02; and in how many cases the Tribunal ruled that additional support should be provided for children with special needs. [109865]

Mr. Ivan Lewis

The Tribunal does not collate statistics based on the location of schools named in appeals or the schools attended by children who are the subject of appeals. However, it does collect information by local education authority (LEA). Of the 19 appeals against Wakefield LEA in 2001/02, five concerned the school to be named in the child's statement. Parents requested a special school placement in three of these appeals and a mainstream placement in the other two.

Parents withdrew 10 of the 19 appeals and the LEA conceded a further four. The remaining five all concerned the detailed provision to be made for children, and in all of these the Tribunal ordered amendments to the provision specified in statements.
