HC Deb 26 March 2002 vol 382 cc846-7W
Mr. Hancock

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) what steps are being taken to prevent computer hackers gaining access to the Defence System through the shared working environment used with Future Offensive Air System staff; and if he will make a statement; [44965]

(2) what assessment has been made of the shortcomings of using the shared working environment for Future Offensive Air System staff; and if he will make a statement. [44966]

Dr. Moonie

The Future Offensive Air System Shared Working Environment enables the Ministry of Defence and industry to work more effectively together in line with the principles of Smart Acquisition. The system incorporates proven security technology that has been extensively tested, and has the necessary security accreditation for the data held. This accreditation included an assessment of the risks from computer hackers. Although the system connects MOD and industry users, security mechanisms prevent unauthorised access from the Shared Working Environment to other defence information systems.
