To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many service personnel and their families were housed in private sector accommodation in each year between 1992 and 1997; and if he will make a statement. [45440]

Dr. Moonie

The information is not available. Prior to 1997 Service personnel who were required to live in private sector accommodation made their own arrangements and were paid an Excess Rent Allowance (ERA). No records are held of the numbers of Service personnel who were in receipt of ERA.
