To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the future of the naval gun competition in the Royal Tournament. [70121]

We announced in September last year that the Royal Tournament in its current form will end in 1999. A special event will be held in the year 2000 to celebrate the millennium. As we said at the time of the announcement, the nature of events in 2001 and beyond are subject to further work on timing, location and format. The future of the naval gun competition is being considered as part of that process. At present nothing has been ruled in or out.
