HC Deb 09 February 1999 vol 325 cc157-8W
Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what discussions he has had in respect of a bid by London to host the 2012 Olympic Games. [68187]

Mr. Banks

I have regular contact with the British Olympic Association, who have to submit UK bids for the Olympic Games. With my support, they are currently conducting comprehensive studies on what is already in place and what needs to be in place to mount a winnable London bid. Following these studies, and taking into account recent developments within the IOC, a decision will be taken on whether to bid for the 2012 Games.

Whilst I am one of the strongest supporters of a top quality bid at the earliest opportunity, I have made it clear to the BOA that Government support will also depend on the introduction by the IOC of a bidding system which is seen to be transparent, honest and can enjoy the confidence of all bidding cities as well as the entire Olympic movement itself. I have stressed this position to Mr. Samaranch, President of the IOC.
