§ Ms JowellThe Department did not send a formal representative to the conference but funded the attendance of officials and experts. The Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jeremy Metters, chaired one of the preceding workshops on "elements of good practice in the use of antimicrobial agents". The conclusion of this workshop was that the use of antibiotics as growth promoters should be phased out. A preliminary report on the conclusions and recommendations emerging from the conference is available, copies of which have been placed in the Library.
