To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is his most recent estimate of the total cost to public funds of the BSE crisis. [55017]

Mr. Rooker

The current estimated cost of the BSE crisis is £4.6 billion over the period 1996/97 to 2001/2002. About 45 per cent. of this sum will be reimbursed by the European Community.
