To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what assessment he has made of the potential for congestion charging to reduce traffic levels. [59689]

Estimates have been made for a number of urban areas including central London (quoted in the White Paper "A New Deal for Transport: Better for Everyone", page 116) and Bristol, Derby, Leeds, Reading and Sheffield, in the Transport Research Laboratory study "Impact of Transport Policies in Five Cities".
