§ Mr. DafisTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales what estimate he has made of the level of(a) current and (b) predicted teacher shortages for the next five years in the (i) primary and (ii) secondary sectors in Wales. [56574]
§ Mr. HainAssessments of the demand and supply of teachers are made on an England and Wales basis only. The model used for this assessment does not predict future teacher shortages. Latest data on vacant teacher posts in Wales show that, as at 13 January 1998, there were 105 vacancies for full-time appointments, or appointments of at least one term's duration, in nursery and primary schools and 60 vacancies in secondary schools.
