HC Deb 24 June 1998 vol 314 cc518-9W
Mr. Cox

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the number of reported incidents of domestic violence in England and Wales during 1997. [46987]

Mr. Michael

Recorded crime statistics relate to offence type, not to the relationship between the victim and the offender. There is therefore no definitive figure for the number of violent crimes which are domestic in nature.

The most reliable nationwide estimate is provided by the British Crime Survey (England and Wales). The most recent survey suggested that, in 1995, there were one million incidents of domestic violence.
