§ Sir Alastair GoodladTo ask the Secretary of State for International Development what representations she has made to her EU counterparts about the need for additional assistance for Sudan; and if she will make a statement. [43121]
§ Clare ShortThe crisis in Sudan was discussed during the EU Development Council meeting which I chaired on 18 May. We reaffirmed our intention to provide further assistance and to call upon the Government of Sudan and the Southern factions to agree a ceasefire and a peace settlement. It is clear that the cause of the crises is the war and without peace there will be continuing crises.
§ Mr. VazTo ask the Secretary of State for International Development if she will make a statement on the present level of British aid to Sudan; to what sectors and categories it is apportioned; and to what jurisdictions and areas it is delivered. [42348]
§ Clare ShortSince February, we have given over £5 million to United Nations agencies and international NGOs in Sudan for the provision of food, nutrition and health support and survival kits for displaced families; the current crisis in Bahr El Ghazal region has been a key 37W focus for this assistance. I approved a further £5 million on 15 May which will be used over the coming months to meet urgent humanitarian needs in this region and other vulnerable areas in Sudan.
