§ Mr. Chris SmithOn 25 September 1997 I welcomed proposals from Lord Wakeham, Chairman of the Press Complaints Commission, for strengthening the newspaper industry's code of practice. His proposals for better protection of children were accepted by the industry and published on 19 December. I have urged the PCC to consider further measures to strengthen the process of self-regulation.
