HC Deb 31 July 1998 vol 317 cc825-8W
Fiona Mactaggart

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many and what proportion of(a) male and (b) female prisoners had (i) no previous convictions, (ii) one or two previous convictions and (iii) three or more previous convictions on the most recent available date. [52837]

Mr. George Howarth

The available information regarding prisoners with previous convictions is based on samples of the sentenced prison population in England and Wales taken at the end of June each year. As this information is based on samples, the results can only be expressed in percentage terms.

The most recently available data relate to samples of those adult males, adult females and male young offenders in prison at the end of June 1996 and are given in the table. Information relating to female young offenders with previous convictions is not available due to the relatively small number of such prisoners.
