HC Deb 30 July 1998 vol 317 c432W
Mr. Robathan

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what assessment he has made of the impact of security restrictions on cycle parking in Central London on the level of cycle use. [53687]

Ms Glenda Jackson

The City of Westminster have made representations to the Metropolitan Police about the need for properly constituted cycle parking facilities to be improved in the Whitehall area, while paying proper regard to considerations of public safety. A number of new locations have been suggested, and the Police currently have the matter under review. I welcome the prospect of such improvements, as being consistent with Government policy to encourage the use of cycles as a healthy, sustainable and environmentally friendly mode of transport.
