HC Deb 23 July 1998 vol 316 cc649-50W
17. Mr. Swayne

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what measures he is taking to encourage the growth of the level of savings. [50504]

Mrs. Liddell

The Government's economic policy is set to achieve stability and the right conditions in which individuals can save with confidence. Our plans for the Individual Savings Account (ISA) are specifically designed to develop and extend the savings habit.

22. Mr. Syms

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on his policy on tax relief for savings. [50509]

Mrs. Liddell

This Government's policy is to encourage individuals to save. We believe tax-free saving can play a part in this and we are introducing the new individual savings account for this purpose.

27. Mr. Loughton

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations he has received in support of his proposals for CAT marking of ISA financial products; and when he expects to produce his final regulations. [50514]

Mrs. Liddell

The Treasury has received 143 responses to the consultation document "Making Saving Easy". The CAT standards will be finalised once those responses have been analysed.
