To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions how many companies registered under the terms of the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations by 1977(a) 1 August 1997 and (b) 1 April 1998; what income was received by the Government agency in respect of companies registering in each period; and how many prosecutions there were in each period of non-registering companies. The first deadline for registration with the Environment Agency (the "Agency") as required by the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 1997 was 31 August 1997 and the second 1 April 1998.

By 1 August 1997 records indicate a total of 581 businesses registered with the Agency and subsequently a total of 3,613 businesses registered for the period 31 August 1997 to 1 April 1998. Fees recovered on 1 August 1997 were £720 and subsequently increased to £1,650,600.

By 1 April 1998 records indicate a total of 2,323 businesses were registered with the Agency for the registration period 1 April 1998 to 31 March 1999 and subsequently a total of 3,376 businesses were registered by the end of June 1998. Fees recovered on 1 August 1998 were £1,497,250 and subsequently £1,482,750.

No prosecutions for non compliance have yet taken place.
