§ Mr. BrakeTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what percentage of the site which will be used for the Millennium Experience has been decontaminated; what contaminants were found on the site; and what checks have been carried out on(a) the decontaminated areas and (b) the areas which were not decontaminated since decontamination was completed. [22723]
§ Angela EagleThe site to be used for the Millennium Experience forms part of the Greenwich peninsula site. It has been used for a variety of industrial purposes, including gas production, over a long period. Soil contamination has resulted from these industrial uses. Reclamation work has therefore been carried out on the whole of the land owned by English Partnerships on the Peninsula, including the site to be used for the Millennium Experience. The nature of this work varies according to the mix of contaminants in any one area.
Following very extensive site investigation and risk analysis, British Gas, as the original polluter, has completed the statutory remediation works. English Partnerships and the New Millennium Experience Co., Ltd. are carrying out further remediation works to a standard suitable for the site's intended use.
All aspects of the remediation works have been carried out to statutory health and safety standards and the works have been monitored by both the Environment Agency and the Environmental Health Department of the London Borough of Greenwich. Following remediation, the site is subject to regular monitoring of groundwater samples on a continuing basis.
§ Mr. BrakeTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what is the total area which will be used for the Millennium Experience. [22722]
