HC Deb 23 February 1998 vol 307 c40W
Mr. Hancock

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what changes in Government policy have taken place since 1 May 1997 in relation to compensation claims for exposure to asbestos from former service personnel; how many claims have been received in each of the last five years; what plans he has to extend the range of former employees eligible for compensation; and if he will make a statement. [30737]

Mr. Spellar

Former Service personnel who unfortunately contract asbestos-related diseases as a result of their service in the Armed Forces can claim a war pension. No policy changes have been introduced affecting this group since 1 May 1997. However, my Department is sympathetic to concerns that compensation arrangements for former Service personnel suffering from asbestos-related diseases may not be as favourable as those for former MOD civilian employees. This issue is being examined and we hope to reach a conclusion within the next few months.

The number of compensation claims received by my Department in each of the last five years from former Service personnel in respect of asbestos-related disease was:

  • 1993: 13
  • 1994: 19
  • 1995: 16
  • 1996: 9
  • 1997: 7
