HC Deb 23 February 1998 vol 307 cc81-2W
Dr. Fox

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what financial guarantees have been extended to the construction companies and their subcontractors in association with the Hyundai project in Dunfermline. [30685]

Mr. Wilson

This is a contractual matter for the companies concerned.

Dr. Fox

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the total public moneys expended in the Dunfermline area in association with the Hyundai project, separately identifying the costs of the provision of utility infrastructure for the development area and the reconfiguration of the M90 interchange at Halbeath. [30690]

Mr. Wilson

I refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave to the hon. Member for Galloway and Upper Nithsdale (Mr. Morgan) on 16 February 1998,Official Report, column 505.

In addition to the sums expended by the Scottish Enterprise Network on the preparation of the site, the East of Scotland Water Authority has spent about £1.5 million on water and sewerage infrastructure related to the Hyundai project.

The upgrading of the M90/A92 Halbeath Interchange—a Design and Build contract valued at £8.4 million which will be opened in March—is designed to relieve congestion and improve traffic flow at the interchange and was included in the Trunk Road programme prior to Hyundai's decision to locate its new semiconductor facility at Dunfermline. The upgrading work was not associated with the Hyundai project.

Dr. Fox

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will take steps to protect employment levels amongst the construction companies and their subcontractors during the suspension of work at the Hyundai project in Dunfermline. [30766]

Mr. Wilson

There is a strong demand for the specialist services offered by many of the companies involved. Employment levels within these companies are however a matter for decision by the companies themselves.
