HC Deb 09 February 1998 vol 306 c10W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what inspections of Sellafield have taken place by Euratom inspectors since 1 May 1997. [28173]

Angela Eagle

Article 35 of the Euratom Treaty requires Member States to establish facilities for the continuous monitoring of the levels of radioactivity in the environment. The European Commission periodically arranges for groups of experts to visit Member States to verify the operation and efficiency of these facilities.

The most recent verification visits to the UK took place in May and December 1993 and evaluated monitoring facilities in the vicinities of Dounreay and Sellafield respectively. The Commission concluded that the monitoring facilities met the required standard on both occasions.
