Mr. Clapham

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many applicants for an award in respect of chronic bronchitis and emphysema have failed the FEVI test since April 1997; and how many have been rejected since April 1997 because they did not meet the service qualification, broken down by coalfield area. To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what was the total number of applicants for chronic bronchitis and emphysema awards(a) between September 1993 and April 1997 and (b) since April 1997; and what was the number of awards made in each of those periods. [28266]

Mr. Denham

The total number of claims for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit in respect of chronic bronchitis and emphysema for the period 13 September 1993 to 31 March 1997 was 50,195 and in the same period 5,428 awards were made. Since 1 April 1997, a further 22,984 claims have been received and 6,752 awards made.
