To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions when he expects an SSR system to be introduced at Belfast International Airport; and what contingency plans he has in the event of late installation. [27015]

The decision whether or not to provide Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) facilities at Belfast International Airport is a matter for the airport authority, Belfast International Airport Limited. I understand that the present plan is for an SSR system to be introduced in the summer of 1999, after the radar display system has been up-dated to handle SSR data.
