§ Mr. David MarshallTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans he has to assist the Glasgow Regeneration Alliance; and if he will make a statement. [25131]
§ Mr. DewarThe Glasgow Regeneration Alliance brings together all the key agencies concerned with the long term regeneration of Glasgow. Making the most of the city's many opportunities while regenerating its most deprived communities will require a comprehensive long term strategy for Glasgow. I have held discussions with the Alliance partners about how The Scottish Office can best support the Alliance in preparing and implementing such a strategy.
I have agreed that The Scottish Office should now formally join the Alliance, to work with the partners to make the most of Glasgow's opportunities. As a demonstration of commitment to this partnership approach, I am announcing today the offer of direct financial support to the Alliance of £500,000 for 1998–99, to help with the employment of staff and other resources to develop and implement the strategy for the city. Senior officials have been appointed to serve on the Board and Directors" Group. Finally, I am making arrangements for The Scottish Office to handle issues concerning Glasgow in a more co-ordinated way when they cut across Departmental boundaries. I am confident that these measures will assist the Alliance in its immediate task of preparing a comprehensive plan for the renewal of the city, and in its longer-term objective of regenerating Glasgow.
