§ Mr. BakerTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what estimate he has made of the levels of air pollution around United Kingdom airports which can be ascribed to pollution from(a) aircraft and (b) motor vehicles. [61893]
§ Mr. MealeDetailed estimates of polluting emissions have been prepared for 11 areas of the United Kingdom (London, Manchester, West Midlands, Merseyside, Glasgow, Bristol, West Yorkshire, Southampton, Portsmouth, Swansea and Port Talbot and Middlesbrough). Emissions from a wide range of sources are calculated for each 1km by 1km grid square within the areas for which these inventories have been produced. The sources examined include both aircraft and motor vehicles. The emissions estimates are available in a series of reports prepared by the London Research Centre on behalf of my Department. Copies of the reports will be sent to the hon. Member shortly.
Further information on emissions from aircraft and road transport is available from the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory, which can be accessed through the Department's web site at http://www.environment.detr.gov.uk/airq/aqinfo.htm. The web site also includes links to the London Research Centre's site which contains some of the relevant information from the local inventories.
