HC Deb 29 April 1998 vol 311 cc168-9W
Mr. Webb

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what was the cost to the Exchequer in the most recent year for which figures are available of those benefits in kind which are taken up by pensioners on income support and which are not available to pensioners on incomes above income support levels. [34149]

Mr. Denham

The information requested is not available.

Pensioners receiving Income Support are entitled to free sight tests and dentistry, the full value of spectacle vouchers, free wigs and fabric supports and refund of necessary travel costs to hospital for NHS treatment through arrangements which are the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Health. The cost to the exchequer is not identified separately in respect of pensioners.

Children of pensioners receiving Income Support are entitled to free school meals, but no figures for the national costs of the scheme are held. Pensioners receiving Income Support may also be entitled to other benefits in kind administered by local authorities.
