HC Deb 28 April 1998 vol 311 c78W
Dr. Tonge

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what proportion of dwellings in the private rented sector were, as defined by the Housing Act 1985,(a) unfit for human habitation, (b) not unfit for human habitation but in serious disrepair and (c) lacking basic amenities at the latest available date. [39334]

Mr. Raynsford

Our latest available information indicates that 17.9% of occupied private rented sector dwellings are unfit for human habitation and 1.8% lack one or more of the basic amenities. Information is not available on the number of private rented sector dwellings that are not unfit but in serious disrepair. However it is possible to estimate, on a different definition to that in the 1985 Act, that some 6.4% of privately rented housing is fit but suffers from substantial disrepair.
