HC Deb 27 April 1998 vol 311 cc4-5W
Dr. Tonge

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what plans his Department has to commission research into matters relating to private tenancies, with particular reference to six-month assured shorthold tenancies. [39336]

Mr. Raynsford

Information on matters relating to private tenancies, including assured shorthold tenancies, is collected on a continuous basis by theSurvey of English Housing, and reports are published annually.

The Department is currently commissioning research to investigate harassment and illegal eviction in the private rented sector and is planning, later this year, to commission research into private renters' attitudes to, and experiences of, the private rented sector. Both studies will cover private renters with assured shorthold tenancies.

1London Transport calculates statistics on the basis of four week 'periods'. The figures in the table relate to the 13 periods in the financial year 1997–98.

Our Public/Private Partnership proposals will ensure that London Underground has the resources it needs to replace the worn out equipment that leads to rolling stock, signalling, and control failures.

We will also be working with London Underground to see how best to tackle the other causes of delays.
