HC Deb 20 April 1998 vol 310 c461W
Mr. Sarwar

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many children have been excluded from school in each academic year since 1990–91. [39176]

Mr. Wilson

Information on exclusions from school was not collected centrally before 1994&․–95. The most recent available information, as set out in the yearly report on Attendance and Absence in Scottish Schools published by the Audit Unit of HM Inspectors of Schools, is in the table.

Number of Pupils permanently excluded1 Number of half days of temporary exclusions
Primary Secondary Primary Secondary
1994–95 47 296 220,115 2157,958
1995–96 30 155 31,207 279,636
1996–97 16 91 36,433 276,979
1Some authorities show a total of zero for permanent exclusions, either because as a matter of policy they do not permit permanent exclusions or because they do not record permanent exclusions separately.
2For 1994–95,data on temporary exclusions are available only for January-July 1995.
