To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what estimate she has made of the number of families who would receive mobility component disability living allowance if children under the age of five years were assessed and their mobility needs in the same way as DLA care component recipients. If the current entitlement conditions for receipt of the mobility component were to be extended to children under the age of five an estimated 40,000 children might benefit.

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many persons who receive DLA mobility component are aged between 65 and 80 years. [17236]

Mr. Denham

As at 31 August 1997, there were 370,000 people aged between 65 and 80 receiving the mobility component of disability living allowance.

Disability living allowance is available for people who become disabled before the age of 65. Once awarded there are no upper age limits and benefit continues for as long as the disabled person continues to satisfy the conditions of entitlement.

Ages go from 65 to 80 inclusive.
